Honey is a natural ingredient that has been used throughout history for various reasons. From cooking, wound care, sickness aid, and folk medicine, honey is nature’s versatile resource.

But did you know that it could be used for skincare routines? Today, we’ll explore why honey should be implemented into your skincare routine, different options, and of course, a recipe!

WHY HONEY?

Why not honey? Honey is so good for you, both in and out! It would be harder for us to list all the reasons why you shouldn’t use honey!

To begin, you can use honey to help with breakouts. Because honey contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it has the ability to reduce inflammation caused by acne. And for those who need help with clogged pores, worry not! Honey also contains a natural enzyme that is able to act as a gentle exfoliant to help remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. And best of all, because honey is non-comedogenic, it itself won’t clog up your pores.

Another wonderful thing that honey can help remedy is inflammation. Y’know those antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties? Those can help reduce inflammation caused by acne, sunburn, and other allergic reactions. And speaking of reduction, honey can be used to minimize already existing scars.

A third mentionable benefit of honey is its natural humectant, a substance that attracts and retains moisture in the air that leaves your face feeling smooth and hydrated.

And guess what… Everything it does for your face, it does for your lips!

WHICH HONEY?

Whenever using honey for skincare, it’s honey in its most natural raw form. Here are a few of our suggestions:

1.) Tupelo
Nicknamed “The Queen of Honeys,” the Tupelo Honey is derived from White Ogeechee Tupelo Trees. This beautiful floral flavored option is deliciously delicate as it’s consistency is thinner and resists crystallization better than other options. Sweeter than most, you only usually need a small amount to get a good sum of that sweet-rich flavor. But of course, when it comes to skincare, feel free to use as much and as little as wanted!

2.) Black Locust
Sourced from the Black Locust plant, this option is not only lighter in color but also flavor. It’s vanilla-y tone makes for a perfect match with its fruit aroma.

3.) Orange Blossom
This citrusy choice is sourced from citrus plants such as lemon, limes, grapefruit, and like the name suggests, oranges. With this option, you can expect to have a rich flavor with, of course, citrus notes all over.

DIY HONEY FACE MASK RECIPE

Now comes the good stuff! Because who wouldn’t want a natural face mask that you can make without spending a lot of money? Plus, it’s a nice feeling knowing all the ingredients and being able to pronounce them!

Ingredients

1.) 2 tablespoons of raw, organic honey
2.) 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
3.) 3 tablespoons of white or brown sugar
4.) 1 teaspoon of coconut oil
5.) 1 teaspoon of rosemary oil (optional)

Instructions

1.) In a small bowl, mix together all of the ingredients until they are well combined.

2.) If desired, mix 1 teaspoon of rosemary oil.

3.) Apply a thin layer of the mask to your face with clean hands - make sure to cover all areas of your face, including your lips if desired.

4.) Leave the mask on for 15-30 minutes, or until it has completely dried.

5.) With warm water, rinse off the mask and pat your face dry with a clean towel.

For those who are curious about turmeric, sugar, coconut oil and rosemary… While turmeric helps with hyperpigmentation, eczema, and dark circles, sugar acts as a supportive exfoliant. The coconut oil helps support moisture retention, inflammation, and contains antibacterial properties while rosemary oil acts as toner and helps with preventing acne.
Now all that’s left to do is make, use, and take this recipe and new knowledge of honey to all your friends so that they can reap its benefits as well!
